Warehouse management system by Jessica Jetten

Warehouse management and warehouse management systems
Warehouse management is all business processes concerning goods and services that are being stored and that are or aren’t at their storage place yet. You can think of administration of products that enter the warehouse or what needs to be done to deliver the products.

To simplify warehouse management most firms use a computer system, a warehouse management system. This system has 3 functions. The first function is being used when the products enter the warehouse. This function shows where the products should be placed. For example, products that are being sold often should be in the front of the warehouse so they can get picked up quickly. The second function keeps up where all the products are and if they might have been moved to another place. Another possibility of this function could be that it blocks products that cannot be sold anymore because of for example the expiration date has been passed. The last function is being used when the product leaves the warehouse to go to the customer. This function tells where the product is placed.

How can a warehouse management system improve business processes?
There are several warehouse management systems available on the market. They all offer intelligent features that makes the storage of goods more efficient. Therefore, less mistakes are made. Also, the stock can be smaller because of more efficient management. For example, the system will only give the order to the forklift truck driver to store a pallet, if there is also another pallet that must be taken out of stock. Therefore, the truck driver never rides with an empty truck.

Warehouse management Amazon
Amazon also uses warehouse management systems. When an item is ordered online, the system quickly finds out where the product is placed in the warehouse and send a worker to go get it. You would think that everything is categorized and organized in a special way, but the opposite is true. The products in the warehouse aren’t organized logically, or at least not in a way a human would do. The products are being placed at random shelves. When a product gets picked up by a worker, it is scanned to make sure it is the right one. Amazon is also able to track the location of the product at any time because it is being scanned several times throughout the process.
