Information systems for environmental sustainability
By Jessica Jetten
Rather than talking about what information systems in
logistics could do for efficiency or profits, this blog is about how
information systems can help society improve sustainability.
While doing research for this topic, I found a very
interesting article written by Malhotra, Melville and Watson which is called
“Spurring impactful research on information systems for environmental
sustainability”.
They give two examples of why information systems can
help improve sustainability.
1. A
large technology consulting company creating a simulation of a smart city to
create more awareness for climate and energy issues and get people more engaged.
2. A
logistics firm gathered data every day of every truck and analyzed it. With the
results, they created routes that improved safety, lowered emissions and lowered
maintenance expenses. They also created the most sustainable routes by
minimizing left-hand turns for the drivers to reduce gas usage
This shows that information systems for environmental
sustainability can help companies transform supply chain activities to benefit
society both economically and environmentally.
Their paper is based on literature research. In their
conclusion, they state that information systems have played a key role in the
globalizing world economy. It has been of great value for many organizations
and industries by reducing costs, creating new products and offering better
communication with customers. However, IS must be used more for the greater
good cause; sustainability. They think that this will happen through the use of
internet. People will get information of the environmental effects of their
objects on themselves and others. For example, they will get notification when
their AC use is too much. Malhotra et al. think that social media is the key to
more “green” IS.
